Reisen

Travel itinerary & Expense UX Case Study

Role

Brand & Product Designer

Industry

Itinerary Mobile Application

Duration

5 weeks

Context

Reisen was developed to address common challenges travelers face, including trip organisation, budgeting, and coordinating with travel companions. As a UX Designer, I aimed to create a comprehensive travel and expense planner that simplifies these tasks through an intuitive, user-friendly design. This project was part of my MA Innovation Design dissertation and spanned over five weeks, during which I balanced multiple projects simultaneously.

The Challenge

Through extensive research, including online questionnaires with 402 responses and one-on-one interviews, key pain points were identified: fragmented itinerary management, difficulty in budgeting, and lack of collaborative planning tools. These insights guided the creation of user flows, information architecture, and feature prioritization to address these challenges effectively.

The Design Process

  • Research & Planning: Analysed user behavior in planning itineraries, identified demographics, and studied existing applications to understand successes and failures.

  • Branding & UI Guidelines: Developed a brand that reflects both experience and technology, accompanied by UI guidelines covering typography, colors, buttons, inputs, icons, spacing, interactions, and system statuses.

  • Wireframes & Prototyping: Created wireframes and prototypes using Figma, mapping user flows and refining through iterations.

  • User Testing: Conducted usability testing with travel enthusiasts and a professional planner, leading to improvements in navigation and collaborative features.

The Result

The final user-centric app focused on three core features:

  • Itinerary Hub: Centralised management of travel plans with collaborative capabilities, pull itinerary from community, and save for later travel wishlists.

  • Expense Planning: Personalised way for budgeting (Plan-first or Budget-first), estimate trip costs, tracking budgets, recording group expenses.

  • Community Building: A platform for users to log their travel experiences and offer advice to fellow travellers.

These features collectively address the identified pain points, providing a seamless and intuitive user experience.

Lesson from the project

This project underscored the importance of user research in informing design decisions, and the magic of iterative design. Key takeaways:

  • The law of conserving complexity is more important than trying to achieve minimalist design

  • Simplify navigation enhances usability

  • People highly value word of mouth than any other type of marketing

Reisen is a MA dissertation project that set a new standard of planning and understand the complexity in each type of users decision-making behaviour. Although this is the concept stage, and need many more iterations, it is regards as a very high potential to turn into the real business model.
